Art

Art at Ben Jonson Primary School fosters an appreciation and enjoyment for the imagination. We believe art education develops skills such as exploring, experimenting, creating, innovating, sharing and supporting. We also feel that learning in art is a wonderful place to take risks, make mistakes and to persevere to achieve results.

Through our specialist art teacher, we provide a high-quality art curriculum which stimulates children's imagination and creativity; involving them in a range of visual, tactile and sensory experiences whilst enabling them to express what they see, think and feel through the use of the elements of colour, texture, form and pattern.

Through our progressive curriculum, we introduce key skills, resources and ideas so children can develop their confidence in controlling materials and tools, acquire knowledge and become increasingly proficient in various art techniques and processes. By equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, children can invent and create their own works of art. Children are encouraged to experiment imaginatively and learn from the creative journey.

All our children benefit from art sessions with our art teacher, linked where possible to their year group topic. Through art, children are encouraged to gain confidence to express themselves and enjoy opportunities to discover more about themselves and the world around them. As children progress through the school, they are challenged to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design and analyse artistic work using the language of artists.

What will our artists and designers be able to do when they leave us?

By the time our children leave Ben Jonson Primary School, we aim for our artists and designers to be creative, independent and reflective across a variety of media. Children will learn to express themselves including their thoughts, feelings, experiences and imaginations through their artwork, and they will show a developing ability to represent these with increasing accuracy and attention to detail.

Through positive learning experiences in Art, students will develop visual literacy which enables them to observe and perceive the world with an increased awareness and aesthetic sensitivity. Children will know how to use and experiment with a range of artistic tools and techniques with confidence, considering their creative implications and safety aspects. Children will learn to make informed judgements and aesthetic and practical choices independently. Children will learn about, and be inspired by, a wide range of artists, craftspeople and designers from different points in space and time, in order to understand some of the richness of art across the world and its contribution to culture.

We aim for our children to have strong interpretative and analytical artistic skills, being able to talk confidently and debate their responses to art and art movements, as well as their own artwork. Children will answer a wide range of higher-order thinking questions, and allow their answers to inform their responses creatively. Children will be able to work collaboratively, communicating their ideas with others, problem-solving and working together towards a goal. Children will develop an appreciation and enjoyment of the visual arts that can enrich all of our lives.
